The target of the ENLIGHTENING project is the design and development of a new class of fully organic materials for the visible light-induced degradation of hazardous chemicals in aqueous environment. Within this proposal, we envisage the functionalization of a supporting polymeric material with suitable chromophores able to trigger oxidation or reduction processes on pollutant substrates – such as herbicides, pesticides and organic emerging contaminants – by taking advantage of the enhanced photoredox properties of the excited states.
The newly engineered materials will address key challenges from an environmental perspective, especially taking into consideration their sustainable use in real-life applications, such as in the wastewater treatment.
